From the WTF Files:

This morning, not one, but TWO ppl talking Merc/Gemini/Apollo with me. You never know.

a) Andy at work, whom I've always liked. Taurus on the edge of Gemini. He was helping me lug this gigantic laundry bag, and the conversation just..what..from his enormous collection of model trains, from all eras and memorabilia - the pictures! - and his experience actually driving them and being impressed (?) that I knew about Ravenglass, UK, lol - to his Civil War reenactment experience and battlefield ghosts of Gettysburg. We talked for half an hour, LOL - and then I said, "Well, MY area of expertise is early manned space - Mercury/Gemini/Apollo.." And he TRIED to 'quiz' me..asking about Wernher Von Braun and Project Paperclip and DERP, WHAT WAS THE TYPE OF ROCKET THE MERCURY PROGRAM USED, AND WHAT WAS ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE (Atlas, and originally a missile, blah blah), Come now, Andy - ask me something HARD...LOL. So, then it went on to, 'Kids today know nothing of these guys, and all they did, and there's only one Mercury boy left, and and and..' Dang. You never know.

b) Random guy at the convenience store, re: my patches on my bag. O M G. Another half hour, ranging from the manned space program to Bob Lazar/Area 51 to stealth tech to Project Indoctrination. What.

Both said, "We should hang out." L O L

I'm such a guy. I love surprises like this. This shit NEVER happens to me.

Nerd-Dom at full saturation: I just downloaded and converted not one, but TWO versions of The Flash's theme.

I know.

Hey, all. I'm sorry I've been so non-existent, on here, but if it matters, I've been pretty non-existent in real life, as well. The loss of Frankie has slammed so many doors shut in me - yet, has also opened so many worm-cans, I could start a fucking psychiatric bait shop. And, one of the worst things is, my filter seems to be irrevocably broken. I'm feeling things HUGE and telling people *exactly* what I think, and that is - let's face it, folks - never, EVER good.

If it helps, also, I've bailed from Twitter and my 'real' Facebook, as well. I thought I was okay with it, but all the, 'Yay! We're all going to see the Cure!'-posts are just fucking too much for me.

Too many things are suddenly just OVER. Time to move on, move on, move on.
correctiveshoes621: (Dream Ed)
Okay - talk me down, ppl.

I talked to an amazing couple from Texas at the grocery store and am seriously thinking about becoming a....trucker.

WTF is holding me, here?

Yeah, I'm terrified of semis, in general - but the money. The Life on the Road - I would love it. Annnnnnd the money. At the rate I'm going...where I'm at - with most places being the same horrific, degrading, hardcore stress-filled, no-thanks, safety-violation-filled crap - - this may be a viable option to, a) save actual money to retire, b) preserve what's left of my health - and back/hip, in particular. The arthritis is really getting the best of me, lately - and with winter, coming..

There's just no way to work full-time, doing what I'm doing, where I do it - and do nursing school. I know. Time to face it, though.

She did say to wait until spring, because that's when most classes start - ? - sounds good; she also said what companies to watch out for...and SHE was the driver, in the family. Not the husband. HER.

So. You never know. Yee haw.

La la la la - off 'til Monday. Took a nice walk on the walking trail near my house - - and no Bigfoot, and yes, I kept my eyes peeled :D

Frankie, my Frankie. I'm not really the praying sort, but you never know. I'm UTTERLY not the Facebook sort, but yet, I'm back on there, again. ONLY FOR FRANKIE. First cranial surgery went unbelievably well - he was talking within an hour. They're going to hit the second and third tumors with radiation, and the lungs, as well. Long road ahead, but he is so. so. loved, by so. so. many. He's touched so many lives with his warmth and positive good humor and ENORMOUS, generous heart - he was literally 'trending' on FB, like some Kardashian, lol - this is SO not about me, but I cannot imagine my life without him. He's family, period. SO good to talk to him - he is the one person that I know, without question, that loves me. And Oh, how I love him.

And yes, I know the odds, and yes, I know the typical outcome, but IT'S FRANKIE, so let me have my denial, here.

My son has friends over, and was kind enough to let me use his lappy. Nice guys - and I like hearing their laughter from the patio.

I'm baking some more spaghetti squash for the week, and just brewed a fresh pot of coffee, for my online wanderings - not sure how much time I'll have, so I got to make the most of it.

The Good: I'll get a lot more done, around here, with no pc. Annnnnd a lot more sleep. I still may be able to get drivers for this thang, so trying to think positive. For the same price, I may just get them to sell/put in a whole new OS - gonna call some ppl, tomorrow. All is not lost!

The Bad: My son ponied up and bought a new tower from ebay - - slow as balls, but not complaining - BUT - he linked it to the wrong account, and it BOUNCED. SO, I will pay back the bounce fee, as well. Dammit. Poor kid, trying to be nice!

The Ugly: My disk for the first season of, Dexter works, but only the sound. AND THE SOUNDS. OH, MAN. Yuck.

So. I know I'm missing stuff on here - my computer stays on for brief periods, then, whammo! BSOD, featuring kernals, roots, stops and all sorts of interesting codes and things. So, once more, I apologize for it. Naught to be done, though, until I get my car inspected - everything, literally, hinges on it.

I was supposed to get it in on Wednesday, but my son wouldn't get up to drive me back. SO, I was damned lucky to get an appointment on Tuesday, and will be driving his car in the meantime, and just hope it doesn't take too long or need too much. Gotta get in gear and take it now, to do laundry and shop..and have to have it back by noon, for him. I *hate* relying on the whims of other people. Hate. Some folks have mighty short memories, lol.

BTW, LOVING, 'Astronauts' Wives Club' - and just nerdy enough to pick up the few errors..

This was absolutely wonderful. 70% Gene Kranz, and that was barely enough:

Yep. Yeah. Last day of vaca. Thinkin' thoughts, yo.

Contacting various places/ppl to obtain one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_tree - at least, a seed from one of them. My best bet is the sycamore in King of Prussia, as it's closest, so I hope they get back to me about it. My wish is to have a seed interred with my ashes, once I'm cremated, and, no, that's not a morbid thought, it's a joyous one. :)

If you haven't seen, The Zero Theorem, let me rec' it, strongly - absolutely changed me:

What a day it's been. Love Twitter.

a) They 'live tweeted' the lunar landing, in 'real time', just incredible.

b) Brian Cox, calling conspiracy theorists, 'colossal nob ends'.

c) COMMANDER CHARLES MOSS DUKE TWEETED, AND YES, I GUSHED. It was only his third tweet, EVER - what a thrill.

d) Nick Howe from the Royal Astronomical Society said I have a cool son, and is really nice and chatty :)

e) Hayley from, 'Stargazing Live' is so nice, and turned me on to some bangin' new music, which I fell in love with INSTANTLY - this song, 'GO!' was appropriate 'cos we were all talking about Gene Kranz, at the time:

And love this, too - hilarious - 'Gagarin' - the whole album - 'The Race for Space' is good!

YAY, SPACENERDS! YAY, APOLLO!
correctiveshoes621: (lonely)
You all know what day it is - my nerd Superbowl, the anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing.

Watching, Rocket Men to celebrate, and it's fantastic. Tears, here. It's amazing to me, still, how this stuff never gets old - seeing 'my boys', they feel like family, to me. Not enough time spent on the Mercury and Gemini programs, nor on the Apollo 1 tragedy, but, that's just me.

Still bits, here and there, that I've never seen, and that's thrilling - and so much that's become familiar canon, to me. Jim Lovell, walking that walk with Frank Borman; how exhausted, they must have been. Tough little Gus Grissom, Ed White's elation during his, 'million dollars'-spacewalk, Wally Schirra's perfect hair and John Young, lying on his back to get the water out of his spacesuit..Geno Cernan, 'down among 'em' - still one of my favorite home-made ringtones. Gene Kranz' vest. The look of absolute wonder on Chris Kraft's usually-terrifyingly-stern face and Charlie Duke's jerk!flomp of relief when the Eagle touched down - and his endearing-as-hell flub, 'Twanquility'..

And Neil Armstrong. Can't touch that. His voice - as wound-up as I imagine he ever got, yet calm as glass to us, 'normals' - still fills me with warmth and pride and such affection and admiration. The perfect man for the job; there simply are no words. And yes, I still remember watching it live, as a newly-minted six-year-old, allowed to stay up and witness this event, lying sideways on the back of our fabulous aqua sofa, marveling. That that was a MAN, up there. On the MOON. Walking AROUND. A man, like my father, like the mailman, like our neighbor, Mr. Quinn, blah, blah, blah. But still incredible, to me.

I know you guys hear the same thing, every year, on this day, but y'know - You can skip it. You can. I understand, and it won't bother me. But it won't change, you know. I still feel it, just as strongly, and for that, I am grateful.

For all mankind.

Good stuff:

My absolute all-time favorite:

And this one's next - as I've actually NOT SEEN IT:

"Behold! Its icy visage revealed in all its glory!"

Possibly the greatest thing in the history of the internet. Today, anyway. Love yer 'beepin' and boopin' ' retro-space sound effects at the beginning, Stephen. A man after my own heart.

OMG. I *love* this.

You, too, can learn to drive a Rover on the surface of Mars in some dude's attic, in Germany! He has lots of cool stuff to look at and manipulate - I was so proud that I turned on the globe's light and made it spin, lol, and he has a nice set of army figures with cannons and horses - - and you 'win a prize' if you can find and screencap a coin, and I found one!

http://www.homofaciens.de/robospatium_en_navion.htm

IMPORTANT - Instructions how:

ETA: The first coin I found, as noted above, was an old deutschmark coin, and not correct -- the gentleman got back to me almost instantly, and I went back to search, again. This time, I found the right coin - atop the old typewriter - and won! LOL - so he's mailing me the actual coin, and my stats will be posted amongst 'the laureates', lol -- the message I posted to 'the universe' was, of course:

“For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.” - Carl Sagan

Happy Fourth :)

Listening to the nightmusic of passing trains, crickets, and the occasional straggling firework, here:

So lovely and peaceful; I check in on Andy, from time to time. Never a shortage of soup cans. I had NO idea you could do this: http://www.earthcam.com/usa/pennsylvania/pittsburgh/warhol/?content=sendgift His birthday is coming up on August 6, so I just might..

This, however, made my whole week. THIS is what the internet is FOR, IMO. It was new to me, and absolutely delightful; hearing his laughter was like finding diamonds in the bottom of a soggy bowl of cornflakes.

Big day in NASA history:

Fifty Years ago, today - Ed White's (see my icon; I love him so) first American spacewalk, Gemini 4 (with his best friend, Jim McDivitt):

Also - Mission Control celebrates fifty years of being, 'Tough and Competent" ( - Gene Kranz):

I'm wearing my full moon pin (again) to work, in their honor ♥

Never forget!

Tomorrowland.

I know, I know - a) Disney, b) propaganda, c) I'm a total mark. But, from beginning to end, if EVER there was a, 'target audience', I am liEk, 10,000 % it. How embarrassing - but I don't care.

I TOTALLY felt her scream of joy when the rocket launched, and got tears when they went up to the moon.
