Okay - talk me down, ppl.

I talked to an amazing couple from Texas at the grocery store and am seriously thinking about becoming a....trucker.

WTF is holding me, here?

Yeah, I'm terrified of semis, in general - but the money. The Life on the Road - I would love it. Annnnnnd the money. At the rate I'm going...where I'm at - with most places being the same horrific, degrading, hardcore stress-filled, no-thanks, safety-violation-filled crap - - this may be a viable option to, a) save actual money to retire, b) preserve what's left of my health - and back/hip, in particular. The arthritis is really getting the best of me, lately - and with winter, coming..

There's just no way to work full-time, doing what I'm doing, where I do it - and do nursing school. I know. Time to face it, though.

She did say to wait until spring, because that's when most classes start - ? - sounds good; she also said what companies to watch out for...and SHE was the driver, in the family. Not the husband. HER.

So. You never know. Yee haw.

I had a friend, who seemed like the most un-trucker type of person, but she drove a semi for a few years. She took her dogs along for company.

Do you really want ppl to talk you out of this? Or was that ironic?

Sounds kind of romantic (maybe in the US), but here in Germany it's one of the most stressful, competitive and unrewarding jobs I can think of. Driving time is restricted, you're stuck in traffic jams all the time, but you still have to beat the clock or you lose the job to some cheap competitor from a neighboring country.

And those rest areas along the motorway where you have to spend the night! No proper washrooms, no "truck stops". Nothing. (maybe a hooker in a trailer, if you're lucky)

Was that helpful? ;)
(actually, I think you should give it a try)

Hmm...I love the idea of you getting out of your current work environment. My one concern is that you mention back/hip issues. There's LOTS of shifting in driving a big truck, so that may be an issue. However, I'd definitely check it out though. My girlfriend's hubby is a truck driving and he makes LOADS (over 6 figures). It's worth investigating.
