Maybe with just a dot or two of Liquid Smoke, then? I'm afraid to know what actually goes INTO the stuff, but it's a must for meat-free baked beans, in summer..
I use that good turkey bacon to avoid all the grease. I chop it up and cook it with the onions then take it out of the skillet and cook the sprouts, then add the onion/bacon mixture back for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking to warm thru.
I roast my brussel sprouts, it's amazing. But you know...now they're saying that regular consumption of brussel sprouts [and beer] can lead to high arsenic levels. Lovely.
