Sep. 4th, 2007 02:25 am..into the makings of one hell of a storm..
She sat on the roof - which was now growing slick with rain - a little too close to the edge for his liking. Her hair was getting wet, and hung in sodden Mad-Ophelia ropes all over her shoulders. She had her head down, and he knew that she was crying. His heart damn near broke in two, seeing her that way.
How had this happened?
'Hey, my baby..', he sang to her softly, fighting tears, 'Don't you know my love is true..?', but it was stolen away by the wind, and she gave no sign that she heard him.
Carefully, he edged his way towards her across the slippery slate shingling of the roof, and was glad that his feet were bare; though their grip would be soon lost in this rain.
'Lauren..', he called to her, as calmly..as gently..as he was able, 'Honey. Please stop this and come back inside so we can talk. We..don't even have to talk, if you don't want to..let's take a nice hot bath..okay? We'll catch our death out here, in this; there's not even a moon..'
She turned to him, and her eyes seemed endless dark holes, '....Oh, Woman..'
He reached out, extending his hand, 'Come on, baby.'
Slowly, wobbling, she got to her feet and just stood there, staring at him - as if deciding what to do - a waif in this chaos all around her - and then, his heart stopped right dead in his chest - staggering him for a moment - as her feet started to slide out from under her..
...landing her right on her ass...He lurched forward as she continued sliding...right towards the edge of the roof...
He screamed her name into the melee - throwing himself forward onto his bare belly - as she slid over the edge and away from him.
*~*~*
'NO!', he screamed, as he slid over the rough, cold slates downwards towards the edge of the roof on his stomach. He threw his hands out and only barely stopped himself from following her over by throwing his legs sideways and bending his knees a bit.
His eyes, full of both tears and rain; he peered over the edge.
..to see her hanging there, by one hand, her small bare feet swaying so far away in the swirling darkness below, 'Oh, Lauren..Thank GOD! THANKGOD, THANKGOD..hold ON, Woman..HOLD ON...Please don't leave me this way..I love you, you fuckin' hellcat..Come on..'
He was babbling, now, in a panic, as he steadied his own weight as he lay sideways, his leg and hipbone now down IN the enormous, wide raingutter - which was now filling with rain...There were still the dark remnants of leaves in it from last autumn; and it was a slimy, dark brew that slathered across his bare flesh. He scarcely noticed as he reached out and down to her - his tears, flowing freely and without care - as he asked her to take his hand.
She stared up at him - her eyes still just blankly mad...still so damn near utterly lost to him...Her face was white, as if in shock, and a faint smile crept across her lips -
- 'Goodbye, peter brian..', she whispered - as she let go.
*~*~*
With a grunt of pain, he grabbed her wrist, in a flash, and dug in with his nails - and prayed that not only the raingutter would hold, but that he'd not dislocated both their arms, in the process...He held tightly, his face contorted in agony, as she snarled and twisted - 'Let me GO, GODDAMNIT...JUST LET ME FUCKING GO!' - as he gathered his feet under him - squishing squarely down into the raingutter soup - and pushed downwards with both feet - with all that he had in him and yanked upwards, simultaneously - in one monumental, superhuman effort -
- Then, as by some miracle, caught her other wrist, as well - and propelled himself backwards - and her, up and forwards - and back onto the roof..
She skidded on her stomach - knocking both the wind and the fight out of her - across the edge of the roof; skinning both knees, as she went - and he knew that they both would be feeling the effects of this all for a long, long time.
And not just physically.
*~*~*
But at the moment, he did not care.
He pulled her up and into his arms and wrapped his whole body around her; his limbs, scraped and sore and bleeding, and his heart - still pounding as if it were ready to hammer its way out of his very chest - and never ever letting her go, again, EVER - No - Christ, what are you trying to DO, get us BOTH KILLED? Never again, GodDAMNit. Never again.
Oh, Woman. Never again.
My little charge; I will not fail you.
'Oh, Woman..Woman...', he repeated feverishly as he rocked them both in the icy downpour. He felt her body release and go utterly limp as she passed out in his arms.
