Just got off the phone with Pete. He's painting his porch. At this hour. I played some of Shatner's new album over the phone, and we screamed over it, together. Can't wait for it.
Almost four hundred people showed up for DJ and Lars' Big Yu-Gi-Oh Regionals Adventure in Philly, yesterday. I laugh at it, a bit - and so do the guys, really - but some people are INTO it..annnnd, they could be doing worse things in their spare time, I imagine. And I totally 'get it', remembering Ye Olde D'N'D Days with MY nerd posse' - *cough*I even drew us all tee-shirts*cough* - PLUS, this had a potential prize of a thousand dollars. It was their first foray into this sort of thing, and they had fun, but they didn't implement their Great Hotdog/Card-Barter Plan...It was a full day, nonetheless, I imagine. :)
My mother told me two really interesting things, last night:
a) Her sister, Miriam, died at an early age, from stroke. They were very close. Since I can remember, my mother's always sort of stared oddly at me, at times, telling me that I'm 'exactly' like her - in looks, demeanor, even down to the iced coffee I've always lived on since before it became commonplace. Last night, she told me that Miriam had become pregnant out of wedlock *cough* but that it had ended badly - and that the father of the baby was an ass, claiming that Miriam was a ho, and that the child was not his; this was long before paternity tests, mind you. They EVEN went to COURT, which was unheard of. Well, it all became a moot point, I suppose, when the child was allegedly born dead, with some sort of hole - ? - something wrong with its back. Very sketchy, and her sister was never the same, after that. My mother said that Miriam had named the baby girl, 'Carla' (my grandfather's name was Carl).
Anyway -as if this all isn't shocking ENOUGH, she told me that the top producer of some local game show she watches - it escapes me - is named, 'Carla P' - which would have been Miram's baby's name..same age, etc etc. So. She's curious. And it's been on her mind, lately.
She said that once - at church, I believe - there was this snippy woman showing off her baby..And Aunt Miriam apparently picked ME up, and said, 'Now THIS. THIS is a baby.' - LOL - and that Aunt Miriam always felt that I should have been hers. Make of this whole drama what you will...
b) My mother actually asked if I was still writing. I kind of laughed her off, but she insisted that she's, 'always felt that that was where my talent lies' - *snort* - and that I'd best get off my ass and get busy. Bzuh.
Great Big Silence, here. Even on here.
Weird, to befinally alone, right now. Pretty much utterly, too. Such a rare thing that I don't even know what to do with it, or even if I like it, that much. It makes me almost uneasy.
Scratch that - I *do* like it, I just still don't know what to do with it - I'm wasting it, sitting here, I know, I know. So many things that need doing but I'm just too lazy, too scattered - feels like what time I DO have off has become just..recovery time from work, and that sucks donkey balls.
*no offense to donkeys*
