(no subject)

I learned today that rice can be had in some pretty big effin' bags, and that rows of canned goods and cases of bottled water make me happy. Also with the paper goods. And putting everything away was so much fun; it was like, 'playing store', when you were a kid.

Now, if I can get a small freezer to also go in my spare room, I can hoard stock up on lots of other stuffs, too (including a possible half-a-processed-deer, if these guys that my coworker knows 'get one'). Also starting with basic stuffs like aspirin, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap (many uses for dish soap) and batteries. If I call ahead, I can get some items by the case at the amish grocery where I used to work. :)

Even though the Apocalypse/Revolution ™ seems to be somewhat deferred for now, Impending Economic Doom ™ begs this - and yes, I know all about how 'crazy' it seems, but, TOUGH; trying to be an Ant, for a change, instead of a Grasshopper. I mean, my brother-in-law with seven kids (Yes. I know. SEVEN.) is about to lose his job of over ten years - and is desperately trying to line something up...MY job is kicking my everlovin' ASS on a nightly basis, but I am SO grateful to have it; honestly..though agewise/physically-wise, I have to start thinking about schooling...blah, blah, blah, etc.

If nothing else, there will eventually be SOMEONE who needs some of this stuff. There's a lot of people MUCH worse off than I, and I don't mind sharing.

*~*~*

All of ya'll shoulda SEEN the look of absolute horror on my son's face when I blasted Adam and the Ants to clean to/wake him up to pitch in. He called it, 'The Devil's Music', and I cracked up, hysterically.

But, hey. What does HE know? He listens to Gershwin, these days.

*~*~*

And, once again, I apologize for losing the threads of all of you and being lax/non-existant in replying to comments. I should just get some pre-fab 'message' to c/p on here from time to time or something.

Again, unfriending is offered, and I wouldn't blame ya.

*~*~*

The other night at work, Andrea-The-Blood-Girl came onto the floor while I was away from the desk (I was on D Wing alone, where there's only ten people) and in a resident's room.

I hear her go sailing by, down the hallway, "Hi, Lauren..Knew it was you down here!"

I popped my head out from the doorway, "Bzuh? Hi, yeah, it's me. Howya doing?"

"I saw your copy of 'Foucault's Pendulum' on the desk, and thought, 'Oh, good; Lauren's down here, tonight'. I mean it HAD to be YOU. Who else here would be reading that?"

*SNORT*

I choose to take that as a compliment.

I am also stocking up and being afeared (not as much as I was six months ago, but still wary).

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. It may not be IMMEDIATE, but it's still coming, I think. Lots of ppl going to lose their jobs, I fear; and around here? It's mostly construction/factory work - and those are both really unsteady, right now. And these gas prices won't last forever..EVERYTHING'S gonna go up.

I just want to have some sort of backup and preparedness...and I KNOW that my family will have needs, and want to be ready for that. I am SO glad to be the ONLY sibling NOT to have moved back in with my mother, at one point or another. Being self-sufficient helps *slight sarcasm*, too. Hope to God I never have to eat those words.

I am poor; I came UP poor..and, for once in my life? I'm really glad. I live small and can land on my feet. ;)

[identity profile] breakableheart.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes. I agree.

[identity profile] violentfemmebot.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
but it's still coming, I think.

Yeah, it's still coming, especially since the "grand plan" espoused by *BOTH* parties is simply to loosen credit so people can get more phony money (and so far the $700 billion idiot bailout isn't even really doing *that*). Um, since when did people build wealth by getting even deeper in the hole that got us here in the first place? >.<;;;;

I really wish they'd cancel the dumb bailout and give a SUBSTANTIAL (at least $1K) cash stimulus to all taxpayers, and tell them not to rush to Banana Republic but to PAY ON THEIR DEBTS, so they will have more free money floating around in the future. Debt only begets more debt, as I and many others have learned.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. And I KNOW that you actually KNOW, so that eases my fear that it's all paranoia on my part. I do NOT use credit - just an ATM card - and am so so so thankful that I never bothered to get into the 401k at work.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_scarlet_ibis_/ 2008-11-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's okay. I do that too. There's not enough time in my day to do all I want to do online. I marvel at people who have full time jobs, kids and then come home and scour the internet way more thoroughly than I do. Shocking!

[identity profile] mercystreet1986.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's so smart! I should stock up on bags of rice and canned goods too! Never thought to do that until I read your post.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a bad idea; make sure you have boxes/shelving to store the stuff properly, though! I'm worried about the shelf life of the aspirin, etc and keeping the rice/pasta/papergood up and away, so they don't draw mice...out here in the boonie-sticks, one has to worry about such things..eeee....

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Plastic Rubbermaid containers to store the dry goods in are good at keeping out pests. /had weevils in pantry until I started bagging everything right from the store.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
WEEVILS? NOW I GOT TO WORRY ABOUT WEEVILS? What manner of hell is THIS, now?

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the weevils were actually coming from the store. I bought a bag of flour and upon walking in the door, emptied the entire contents into a Rubbermaid cereal container. A couple of weeks later, when I went to use some flour, the SEALED JAR was rife with little weevils pressed up against the plastic. I WAS going to take it to the store and bitch/moan/get my money back, but I got too lazy and ended up just tossing it and buying a new bag. I still empty it now into a container and I Ziploc all of my pasta and bag all other dry goods and have not had that particular problem since.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Once, years ago, I got little mothy-things in a box of rice and it totally freaked me out, so I can relate.

Good idea on the Rubbermaid - right now, it's all on shelving/in cartons. Hmm..

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people I know store their dog food in Rubbermaid containers to deter from bugs/rats/possums/raccoons etc. We have all sorts of evils lurking in Florida. Just ask the two unrelated snakes in my backyard. O___o

[identity profile] hierokeryx.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
hehehe, The Devil's Music.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Love him; the smartass.

"Runnin' away..eh? Can't handle a rowdy bunch of gay pirates with two drummers, eh?"

*Monty Python voice*

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Two drummers, you say???

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we're talking Antmusic, here; total camp, not exactly Beethoven.

How many gay pirates does it TAKE to equal one Larry?

The world may never know..

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I have to lick lollipops to find out the answer? :X

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If I can lick the Ants.

Well, really just their clothes, I guess.

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
OMFG how funny, seeing as how I came close to shoplifting Foucault's Pendulum from the library of the retirement home where we have Brownie meetings on Friday. :X

I had a dream about you and DJ the other night, too. Very very strange.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG READ IT. OR YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF GETTING IT FOR CHRISTMAS.

And, do tell re: dream. I had one where you were involved, too, the other night; I was just telling Gaya. :)

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG wouldn't it be WILD if it had been the same night???

I had gotten you SOME appliance/electronic thing or another that you had offhandedly mentioned (sorry, I have not clandestinely bought you your freezer ;D) and then, based on some info you had mentioned in your post, I stalked the place where you said you lived (curiously, it was very close to my own home, as you now were living in a townhome/apartment/condo in my area) and drove around until I saw you, DJ, and another female friend sitting on your front porch. You had a blanket around your shoulders and a steamy mug and DJ noticed me first and stood up and waved. You got all flustered and cantankerous about me stalking you down and you gave me a huge hug and later a scolding when I delivered whatever present it was I had gotten for you.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This was Thursday night that I was reading it....the dream was the day before that, I think; around there - but I dreamed I came to YOUR house - !!! - and you were all shocked at first until I literally PICKED YOU UP (you were really really tiny) and hugged the shit out of you. Your feet were swinging, and I remember laughing.

..and DAY-UM; I'm even a bitch in OTHER PEOPLES' DREAMS? That takes the cake. The allusions to being sick may be not-so-good-a-thing, OR it could be related to this icon? Hehehehe..As for 'stalking', there is no 'stalking' with you. My door's always open. :)

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't get the sense that you were sick. More like you were enjoying the weather on the porch. It was kinda crisp out, but yeah, you were totally Colberting. Perhaps it was a subliminal icon reference.

OMG it was around that time, too. Imagine if we dreamt about each other on the same night, hugging each other in the same dream?? HOLY SHIT THAT IS WEIRD.

You weren't a bitch, you were just mad at me for seeking you out to bring presents to you, as I know you would be. ;)

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not THAT weird; I've been thinking about you a lot, lately and really miss talking to you. And am STILL in fucking pluckitude's grasp over the recent Frank thing..none of my beeswax, I know; but DAMN. How could dodging a bullet be so damned PAINFUL?

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so fucking pissed about missing Frankie. I thought FINALLY! I would get to see THE Frank McCourt. Yeah, glad I didn't drive down there, pay for parking, trudge over to the place and THEN get denied, cos you would have seen me on the news. SRSLY.

*wails*

*throws self at the mercy of Frankie*

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
...and don't tell me you're not somewhat psychic, as I was just saying to Gaya about those heaters you sent me. We use them every day, now. STILL THE GREATEST SURPRISE EVER.

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad. :)

This box was about the size of a DVD player, but I had the sense that it was a more practical gift.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
New TOYS, maybe?

*cough*

I need 'em.

[identity profile] rickysbaby.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That was a HUGE box. So either there was a shitload of them or a REALLY REALLY BIG ONE.

*cough* I have heard of a really big machine that . . . never mind

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so sad that I have to resort to 'heavy machinery', innit?

*hides front-end loader in shed*

ROFL

[identity profile] violentfemmebot.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
>.<;;; I was just discussing with my mom how we're all basically going to have to resort to communal living, using our skills as leverage and in exchange for other goods and services we need. People are just getting poorer and poorer, and I think the ULTIMATE testament to that is that, even with $1.79/gallon gas, people are still pinched beyond belief (I recall people blaming our crisis on gas prices last summer). How wealthy is the average American? Well, if someone were to dictate that our credit were to be YANKED completely most of us would have quite negative wealth. I think you told me you don't have debt . . . well, you're far wealthier than the average person!

Who else here would be reading that?"

Haha! You are awesome. And your son is hilarious. (How can anyone not like Adam and the Ants? :O)

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree re: barter/leverage...and am so so so glad that I have amish stands around for produce and eggs, etc..I can do this. I can operate all on cash for such things.

And OH, I got debt, chile...yes, indeedy...trying to get a handle on it, as it was IMPOSED upon me, and not of my doing.

And takes Awesome to KNOW Awesome. And DJ...LOL...OH, how he possesses the superior knowledge that only an eighteen-year-old CAN....:D

[identity profile] z0mbiem0m.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if we weren't living paycheck to paycheck, I'd have a basement stocked full of Armageddon Supplies already.

[identity profile] indiwise.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, I'm workin' on it.

My brother-in-law with SEVEN KIDS *did* lose his job..thank God, I could load them up with some stuff...got a food bank connection for them, too, if I have to go drive my sister myself.

A friend and coworker is on LOA at work, too, and has zero coming in, and her insurance from work (short-term disability) has run out..so..whoops. No more fuckin' chemo. We're trying to do something for her, as well.

It's like, ''........''
